Perryville 1862: A Field & Walking Tour - May 11-13

The summer and fall of 1862 saw the Confederacy at its apex in the eastern theater of war. Similarly in the west the southern forces outmaneuvered the Federal Army of the Ohio and invaded the Commonwealth of Kentucky. After Edmund Kirby Smith scored one of the most complete victories of the war at Richmond in late August, the armies under Braxton Bragg and Don Carlos Buell raced towards Louisville, with Bragg being slowed at Munfordville and moving away from Louisville, allowing Buell to reach that city in late September where his army could resupply as well as integrate many new units into his command. In early October Buell moved his now enlarged army towards the Confederate forces scattered from Frankfort to Bardstown. On October 8th a portion of Bragg’s Army of the Mississippi engaged Buell’s army in the small crossroads town of Perryville.

On Thursday evening, May 11, at our base in Danville, Kentucky, we will begin with an overview of the Kentucky Campaign. On Friday morning we’ll head forth and tour the Merchant’s Row historic district in Perryville. Then, we’ll move to the west of Perryville to cover the opening of the battle near the Peter’s Hill area, before moving back into town to discuss the fighting in this area on the evening of October 8th.

On Friday afternoon we will spend time at the battlefield’s visitor center before heading back to Danville in late afternoon.

On Saturday we will head to the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site and undertake a very detailed and comprehensive walking tour of the pristine and beautiful battlefield. We’ll use excellent maps to help us understand the battle as it unfolds. In the morning, we’ll cover the Federal right flank against Hardee’s wing, and in the afternoon, after a picnic lunch, the battle on the left of the Federal line.

The Saturday tour will involve a fair amount of walking (five to six miles) along mown grassy paths. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. And as there is very little shade on the battlefield, bring sunscreen and a hat – and rain gear just in case. Throughout the tour, we will provide you with plenty of water, sodas and snacks.

Join Darryl Smith, one of the very best tour guides and historians of the Battle of Perryville, on this excellent springtime adventure through the blue grasses of the Kentucky heartland.
